5 Tips To Keep Your Dog Safe This 4th Of July

Tip #1:

Keep Your Dog’s Schedule Consistent leading up to July 4th

Dogs like predictable routines and the 4th of July is anything but predictable from a dog’s perspective. In the week leading up to the big day, there’s lots of coming and going, meals are prepared and eaten at odd hours and things in the house are being rearranged to make space.
All this ads to a dog’s stress and when dogs can’t cope with their stress it translates into lots of unwanted behaviors. It may even result in your dog biting a family member or a party guest.

Make sure that you walk or exercise your dog enough, especially before guests arrive, and try to stick to the normal schedule as much as possible. If you can’t provide your dog with the exercise he needs, hire a dog walker, or get a family member, neighbor or friend to help out.

Tip #2:

Start Giving Your Dog Calming Supplements a Couple of Days In Advance

For some dog’s the stress of fireworks is so great it causes dogs to feel confused and disoriented which can bring out aggression. Sedatives can take a good half-hour or more to work and can affect the dog for hours after the fireworks display has ended.

Using natural calming products for anxious dogs is a good alternative.

Natural Calming supplements are generally gentle enough for prolonged daily use, however natural calming supplements may require several hours to several days to take effect.

Tip #3:

Prevent Your Dog From Eating Leftovers and Tablescraps

Why must you resist the temptation of giving even a few scraps from the grill to your pet? Because there is a good chance you will end up in the vet’s office or, worse, the emergency room with a $1,000 bill and a suffering pet.

Did you know that even small pieces of food can give your dog an upset stomach, or even worse, a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas called pancreatitis. You know your dog is a vacuum cleaner, so make sure that dropped pieces of food are picked up immediately.

Tip #4:

Know Your Poisons – Alcohol, matches, Lighter Fluid, Citronella Candles, Glow Jewelry are all toxic to dogs

If your pet drinks alcohol, they can become dangerously intoxicated, go into a coma, or in severe cases, die from respiratory failure. Yes, even beer is toxic; fermented hops and ethanol are poisonous to dogs and cats.

The ASPCA lists chlorates as a harmful chemical substance found in some matches that, if ingested, can cause your pet difficulty in breathing, damage blood cells or even cause kidney disease. If exposed to lighter fluid, your pet may sustain skin irritation on contact, respiratory problems if inhaled, and gastric problems if ingested.

Oils, candles, insect coils and other citronella-based repellants are irritating toxins to pets, according to the ASPCA. The result of inhalation can cause severe respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, and ingestion can harm your pet’s nervous system.

Tip #5:

Give Your Dog an Undisturbed Place Of His Own During the Firework show

More dogs go missing on July 4 than ANY other day of the year.

Leave your pet at home and secure the party perimeter by keeping doors closed so there’s no escape route. If possible, close all the windows, too, and cover them so your pet is insulated from fireworks and loud noises. You can play soothing music or turn on the television to help drown out loud noises. NEVER leave pets outside and unattended.
